SRCC's First 2024-2025 Club Meeting!
The Science Research and Competition Club's 2024-2025 Competitive year at Winston Churchill High School has officially kicked off! We are a competition-based science club dedicated to fostering a passion for scientific research and entrepreneurship among our members.
Over the past two years, we’ve made significant strides in our mission, and we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far:
Non-Profit Formation: We founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a WCHS club to help students compete in international and nationwide science competitions.Awards and Recognition: We were honored to receive the “Innovator Award” twice from the Conrad Challenge, an international competition that sees participation from over 950 teams across 50 countries.Junior Moonshots: We launched Junior Moonshots, an outreach program in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBS). This initiative is dedicated to teaching science and providing soccer training to underprivileged children.Fundraising Success: Through bake sales and a classical music benefit concert, we raised over $2,000 for BBBS.Ecoverse Initiative: We founded Ecoverse, an e-commerce platform that has generated over $3,200 in net sales, collaborating with organizations like the UNHCR and MC Humane Society. What’s Coming UpWe have some exciting competitions on the horizon! One major event is the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), with a deadline on November 7, 2024, at 8 PM ET. This prestigious competition is open exclusively to U.S. high school seniors.
How It Works:
Students submit a research report and an application detailing their findings. From these submissions, 40 finalists will be chosen to compete in Washington, D.C.Prizes: The top prize is an astounding $250,000, with smaller awards for other finalists, bringing the total prize pool to over $1.8 million.Conrad Challenge: Our SpecialtyWe are particularly proud of our track record in the Conrad Challenge, where we’ve been recognized as semifinalists twice! This challenge encourages students to develop innovative, marketable solutions to real-world problems, emphasizing entrepreneurship and technology.
Eligibility: Open to students aged 13-18 globally, teams of 2-5 members must be guided by an adult coach (teacher, parent, or mentor).
Scholastic Art and Writing CompetitionWe encourage our members to express their creativity through the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Feel free to explore any science topic that interests you! Last year, Winston Churchill High School's SRCC received impressive accolades, including a National Gold Medal, a Gold Key, two Silver Keys, and three Honorable Mentions.
Topics can range from Xenotransplantation and Electric Vehicles to short stories on sci-fi climate change—the possibilities are endless!
Join Junior MoonshotsFor those who want to engage in community service rather than just competitions, Junior Moonshots might be the perfect fit! This program partners with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Foundation to support students and children without parental figures. Participants will teach soccer and science for an hour, fostering meaningful relationships and skills.
Dates are to be determined, so stay tuned!
